Peggy And Peter

about

Translation of the sean nós style Irish song Peigín is Peadar by Enda Reilly.
Video is over on Youtube youtu.be/y17ELdWBo9U

I was just going through this song and figured it was sounding alright so I recorded it with the phone there and then trying to not let the squirrel put me off!
The original is a classic and I just thought that it'd be nice for those without gaeilge to experience the meaning of the song.

lyrics

Oh Peggy my dearest
Oh Peggy my Sweet
Who is that man there with you in the sheets
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peter my dearest
My handsome husband
Can't you not see
That this is your son
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

I have walked east
I have walked west
But a beard on a young lad
I've never seen yet
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peter my dearest
Peter mo chroí
It's 7 long years
since you’ve been home with me
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peggy my dearest
Oh Peggy my Sweet
Rise up and fix us all something to eat
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peter my dearest
Oh Peter mo chroí
We've nought in the house
But a small bit of meal
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peggy my dearest
Oh Peggy my sweet
Reach into my pack
There's a cake there to eat
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peter my dearest
My handsome husband
This cake you broughts
Full of gold sovereigns
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí

Oh Peggy and Son
Come let us sit down
As long as I live I'll not leave ye again
Oh a ho a ho mhaithín ó
Ó mhaithín Ó
A stóirín mo chroí
